I do a scavenger hunt the first week of school for my students to find things in the classroom we use all the time(workboxes, paper, etc). It helps them get familiar with the classroom. I also LOVE read alouds! ~ Lisa
ReplyDeleteWe read "First Day Jitters" and the kids are always surprised because it is the teacher who has the jitters. Then we talk about jitters and how it is o.k. to be nervous.
ReplyDeleteI enjoy establishing the rules with my class. I usually have 5 small groups and they are responsible for writing 5 rules on sentence strips. Then as groups finish up, they meet with another small group and out of their 10 rules, they pick the best 5. We keep doing this until the entire class is looking at a set of 10 rules and picking the best 5. Last year was the first year I did it with 3rd graders, and I was very impressed with our class rules last year.

Great get to know you activity is Give One-Get One...put descriptors on a 20 grid form with room for kids to initial or sign. They go around the room looking for someone who matches the description...
ReplyDeleteExample-traveled to the beach this summer, likes to play soccer, read 10 books over the summer, has an older sister and younger brother, saw grandparents this summer, etc. It's noisy, but a nice way for kids to learn things about their classmates they may not have known before.

I love reading books to my new little kindergarteners! They are always obsessed with Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, so we do a bunch of little activities with the book. I also love reading Pete the Cat books and First Day Jitters.
ReplyDeleteI plan to read Do Unto Otters by Lauri Keller. This is a great book to talk about respect and manners. I want to use it to help set the tone and expectations for the upcoming year.

We did a snowball fight. Each student wrote 3 things about their summer on a sheet of paper. They then wadded the paper up. They got in a circle and when I said go, they threw their snowballs. Each student then picked up a snowball. We did this twice to mix the snowballs up. We then went around and everyone read what was on the snowball and tried to guess who wrote them.
ReplyDeleteWe establish a climate of fairness and community for the classroom by learning all about bucket fillers and how to fill up other students' buckets.
ReplyDeleteA Place Called Kindergarten is my favorite book to read to my kindergarteners :) We complete an art activity to go with it.
ReplyDeleteMy grade level has all the students complete some type of All About Me activity/project that week. Students share them in class for their first oral language grade. Then we (all the teachers) get together and post them in the hallway. Not only do our own students love to look at the projects, but I often see parents and other teachers stop to look at them. The kids love it! :)
ReplyDeleteI make a time capsule using a Pringles can. I add a picture from their 2nd day of 2nd grade. I put all of the time capsules away until the end of the year, then I bring them out the last week of school. I love the comments the most. "I'm wearing the same shirt as in my picture." "My hair used to be so long." "I wear glasses now." Priceless!

Now that I've become addicted to Pinterest I will probably do a lot of things different. Overall my goal is to make my kiddos feel comfortable and safe.
ReplyDeleteI like doing All About Me for the beginning of the year. I establish rules, procedures, etc. while doing my best to establish a classroom they look forward to coming back to each day of the school year.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite activity I've ever done was a tour of the school in pre-k. We read The Kissing Hand, and Chester the Raccoon popped out of the book to take us to all the important places in the school! My kids seriously kept asking me for several weeks why no one else popped out of their books. :)
ReplyDeleteNow that I'm in first grade, I don't want to do a tour because the kids know where everything is. But another favorite activity is to read The Recess Queen and then take the kids outside to model appropriate/inappropriate recess behaviors. They love to see the teacher do things the wrong way!
In my developmental preschool, I usually have a few returning students mixed in with the new children, so it is rare when I have a group in which no one knows the routine. That being said, the new 3 year olds don't have the same play skills as the returning 4s, so we do lots of modeling of play schemes, blocks, and housekeeping area play. Our speech therapist loves to read The Kissing Hand on the 1st day, so we always include that. ~Denise
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the getting to know u ball. Everyone sits on their desk and we toss a beach ball with random questions all over it around the classroom. What ever question your left thumb lands on is the question you answer. My 3rd graders love the game and ask to play it all year round. I enjoy it because I get to learn new things about my kiddos.

I love to read Chrysanthemum and then do all kinds of fun activities with our names! We spell them with letters I cut out of cereal boxes and count the letters, the vowels, the consonants, etc. The kids glue that down and I glue a picture on it and we make it into a little class book. I love the beginning of the year!

We do a lot of activities with apples(math, science). We weigh their favorite apple they bring in, we measure circumference using string and teddy bear counters, we graph the different colors of apples brought in, and we weigh daily three apples(whole one, chopped one and peeled whole apple) to see how much water they each lose for the whole week.
ReplyDeleteI love doing lots of getting-to-know-you activities, and we spend quality time discussing rules, routines and expectations for behavior. This year, I'm moving to a new grade and excited to use my Time Capsule activities! :)

Kissing Hand! Love seeing all their little faces. Love seeing the smiles that eventually come when they get comfortable :)
ReplyDeleteSince we are homeschoolers, we LOVE hitting up lots of museums and zoos the first week of school! It's generally very quiet since field trips haven't started yet! =)

I read the book 'Chicka Chicka Boom Boom' which is always a big hit. Then we follow up with some activities related to the story. The children love making their names with the letter.

Me bags are a definite favorite. The 1st day each adult in the classroom shares 3 -4 items that are important to them (ex - family picture, something to represent an interest or hobby...) These items must fit in a lunch bag. Each child is given a lunch bag w/ a note attached for homework & 2 days to bring in their bags. Bags are shared & a class book is made. It's a wonderful way to start developing community. dbednarsk@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI like reading the parents' surveys - answering questions about their child so I can get to know them!

I love getting to know my students and settling into the routine.
ReplyDeleteI am now retired but run a small tutoring business, but I did love to read special books to my kids. They are books that all help establish the rules, talk about self-esteem, friends, etc. I taught most classroom rules that way. I still read these same books to my kids now, and hope they generalize to their schools and classrooms.
ReplyDeleteBesides doing some fun read alouds, I enjoy having my kids decorate a name card that I laminate and we use on our Wonderful Work Wall. I write their name in black sharpie and they color around it one color at a time (kinda like grass with other layers of grass above). It looks a lot better than I'm describing it, I promise!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite beginning of the year activity began last year and it would be making "Jitter Juice" from Babbling Abby's packet. The students love it and talk about it literally all year.
ReplyDeleteJkroske@gmail.com
This year my class will do a Pete the Cat scavenger hunt to learn about the school.
ReplyDeleteI love cute and inspirational read alouds like Enemy Pie and things to tie in important values in the classroom :) I also like the idea of making Jitter Juice!!
ReplyDeleteI like to have the kids create "all about me poems". I make one too :) And we hang them up so everyone can get to know each other.
ReplyDeleteMy first week of school activity is I always read the Kissing Hand to my class. Then we complete a raccoon project (just so I can see how they color and/or cut) and we put a heart sticker on to complete the project. Those hang up in our room for the whole month.
ReplyDeleteKinders on the Block
I always read The Kissing hand to my students during the first week of school. I also like to do a scavenger hunt where students have to find different labels around the classroom and we talk about where different things are in the room. I also like to give the kiddos a tour around the school.

I like to have my students create an "All About Me" poster and then share it with the class. :)
ReplyDeleteI like to read The Kissing Hand and do a craftivity. I also teach them a special song my grandmother taught me at their age.
ReplyDeleteI'm a new teacher and plan to read the story, First day Jitters and do a fun follow up activity!
ReplyDeleteIn my classroom, we do a lot of getting to know you activities and name activities. I love trying in those activities with literature, so we do a lot of read alouds!!
ReplyDeleteI like students to create a creation myth about themselves to share. It's a fun activity that gets the students writing again.
ReplyDeleteI love having my students draw a self portrait which becomes their first piece of work up on our wall.
ReplyDeleteI like establishing a routine and getting to know my students. We begin with a partner activity on friendship. The kids(partners) discuss things they like and come up with something they both like or enjoy. I take a picture of them together and attach it to the page where they have written what they both like. Ex. We both like bubblegum. I do glue these on construction paper and laminate them. I display these in the hallway with a heading that says, We Are All Friends in Mrs. Lee's Class. After they've hung in the hallway, I put the pages together as a class book and put in our classroom library.
ReplyDeleteI love working with my students on setting goals for the upcoming year! We must know where we are going before we got there.
ReplyDeleteI usually have the students do a getting to know each other activity where students interview each other. Then the students introduce their partner to the rest of the class using the information from the interview. The students also work in groups to come up with the classroom rules.
ReplyDeleteMany activities with The Kissing Hand
ReplyDeleteI love using fun activities to help them get to know each other. Games, drawings, and fun outdoor scavenger hunts are some of my favorites:)
ReplyDeleteI'm a reading specialist so the first week of school is a lot of assessing for me. But I do love the first day meet and greet in the gym that morning. This past year our theme was shoot for the stars. So we met the bus riders at the door with a red carpet and cameras to give them "red carpet" effect. It was a so much fun!
ReplyDeleteI love reading Tacky the Penguin with my new brood.
ReplyDeleteAnn
I love doing get to know you games :)
ReplyDeleteWhen I taught second, I loved having the kids do a scavenger hunt around the school. Since it's their first year at our school, it helped them get to know the school.
ReplyDeleteI teach in a tiny church school where everyone is already acquainted, so my favorite bts activity is just to sit in a circle and share our summers and our hopes for the new year.
ReplyDeleteBeing that I just graduated college and I am still looking for a job; I do not have any first of the week activities. But I can't wait until I do.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite first week of school activity is Friendship Games where we team up students from every grade into groups and play games together. The students love it and it helps develop a sense of community among the grades.
ReplyDeleteI like to play a variety of games where students can get to know one another, such as: find your puzzle partner, toss the ball, and BINGO.
ReplyDeleteNajda
I like to do a "Find Someone Who..." kind of activity. It's fun to see the students who have known each other for years find out something new about each other!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite first week of school activity is reading Officer Buckle and Gloria and having the students make a star of a rule they should follow in school. Then we make our class rules together. They seem to take more ownership in the rules.

Love reading aloud Back to School stories!
ReplyDeleteThis is my first year in my own classroom, so I'm not sure yet what Back to School activities I will be doing, but it is fun to read about them all and get lots of ideas!
ReplyDeletejkmatuch@aol.com
I love to read the No David books as a way to talk about our class rules and the school rules. The students love David so it keeps them engaged while we are learning the rules. For one of our first bulletin boards, each student makes their own David. They give him a speech bubble where they write/dictate a good thing to do or something not to do :)
ReplyDeleteCongratulations!

ReplyDeleteAfter 30+ years in upper-grades, this will be my first start-to-finish year in kindergarten. I have heard all kinds of horror stories about those first days, but I am hopeful my new little kinder-bears will quickly find out our classroom is a safe place and that their new world of school is going to be a fun place to be every day. I think I will enjoy taking my little ones on a tour of the school during the first few hours. We will meet Pete the Cat for this tour.
ReplyDeleteEach student does a self portrait. We keep them up all year. wendy 1stgradefireworks@gmail.com
