Back to school is hectic! There's no way around the hustle and bustle and learning names, labeling items, filling out forty-seven forms for each student and still finding a moment to rest. It get so overwhelming that many times we forget to just slow down and enjoy the day. The forms will get filled out. Items will eventually be labeled. Sanity will prevail.

The most important thing for back to school is building those relationships quickly. This BTS game show is one thing I've done with my class that gets everyone involved. Gets everyone talking. Gets everyone getting to know each other in a fun, organized manner.

This game also promotes teamwork and cooperation. With a fun Back to School theme, all of the answers for this game are school related. The topics include:

Scrambled-this is almost like playing hangman except no one dies! LOL Students pick a letter and it plops into a space. Keep on choosing a letter until you figure out the word. First person to guess it wins the points!

AlphaBody-I love this category!! Students use their bodies to spell out words! Are bananas your favorite food? Be ready to peel yourself or to shape your arms and legs into a capital B!

Make a List-Gather into teams and help create a list of what might be found in your backpack. In your teacher's desk? On the playground? Which team will come up with the most acceptable answers?

Main Idea-look at this list of three words and see what they all have in common. Candy canes, zebras, and the American flag? Shhh... they all have stripes!

DrawIt-This plays just like Pictionary. A word is given (in a Word document) and students will draw it on the board for other players to guess. You'll soon find out who your aspiring artists are!

I love using Game Shows to help break the ice and also to make learning fun!
The game show listed here is for 2nd to 6th grade. https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-to-School-GAME-SHOW-BTS-2nd-6th-Grade-w-Contestants-interactive-ppt-1350403

I also have it for PreK to 1st which can be found here: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Back-to-School-GAME-SHOW-BTS-K-1st-Grade-w-Contestants-interactive-ppt-1347086Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13426014682773896526noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075206466086088692.post-74185379236125622022014-07-30T23:37:00.002-05:002014-07-30T23:37:49.812-05:00

Have you ever wondered how people make those fantastic long pins on
Pinterest? Here is how I make them. I know you can use the expensive
art programs to make them, but this version uses what everyone already
has on their computers: PowerPoint and Paint. That's it! This version
is super easy and super quick to make. Hope this tutorial is helpful!

Spring Cleaning! This is not usually my favorite time of year.. Spring Cleaning, that is! But, there really IS a lot to be said about cleaning out the old and making way for the new. ESP when it's TpT style!

Lots and lots of sellers are having a sale this weekend.. just in time to help with your Spring Cleaning. Time to dust off that wishlist that has gotten waaaayyyy too long! I know mine has a life of its own right now.... so I'm looking forward to seeing if the sellers I follow are on sale, too.

Make the most of your cleaning! Don't forget to go back and leave feedback on all those purchases you've made in the past. You DO know you earn credits every time you do! These credits go toward future purchases on TpT.. so don't miss out on that!
When a four year old can direct her peers as to how to stand and then tells them, "OK, now put your arms up and yell 'Friends!' then it's time for her to have her own camera!

That's just what happened with one of mine recently. She had the poses going on with 'do this' and 'do that.' All the while, taking tons of shots.

Now, were they any good? Eh, a few of them were. Mostly, a bunch of blurry shots from trying to do it too quickly. But who am I to discourage a future photographer? Last Friday, the JROTC from the high school came to our campus for a presentation. At the time, I was trying to get some apps on my ipods. So, what better time for my little one to put her skills into action?! She had that camera going at EVERY angle you can imagine AND with the biggest smile on her face. It was priceless! Again, about two came out with good composition and no blur. I can honestly say that the ipod is the camera of choice for anyone's wedding or special event. LOL

Putting ipods in the hands of your students is the best thing you could ever do. We've been on shape hunts and color hunts. But we can also look for stages of life cycle of a plant, or begin a collection of types of clouds. It's endless.

Have you put a camera in your students' hands? How have you used them in your teaching?
If you said, "Yes!" you're wrong!! Take a look at this video (parental permission) of 4 and 5 year old PreK students at their first look at augmented reality (AR).
I put the colAR Mix app on my ipads/ipods and downloaded ALL of the coloring sheets that were available on the colARapp website. One set of coloring pages is free, the others are all paid. Since I loved several pages from each, I went ahead and got them all and I am SO GLAD I did!! I would highly recommend them all.
Not at all! Once you've downloaded the colAR coloring pages of your choice, allow the students to color them using map pencils, crayons, or markers. Now, be aware that coloring too dark near the outlines will keep the app from 'catching' the picture. Also, the app does like to have some white in the background as well. Both help the app identify the page.

Go to your colAR app on your device and touch the Play! icon. Position your device over the colAR coloring page, about 12 inches away or until the screen turns blue and "locks" your picture. If this is your first time to use it, you'll know it has activated when your jaw drops and your eyes get real big! LOL

Now the fun really begins! There is so much to explore now that the picture is activated. Making sure that the entire page is still in the screen, move the device slowly down to in front of the page like the boy has done in this picture. It will give you the front view. You can move in closer to see the picture bigger. Sometimes, there is an icon on the screen for that particular picture. If there is, make sure to touch it to see what happens! It is hard wrapping your mind around the inanimate paper coming to life! But the animation takes on the coloring you've done.

This app is definitely one that you'll enjoy as much as the students. It is for ANY grade level.
A way to practice story elements such as character and setting? Puppet Pals is fun for virtually any grade level. This is a free app, but I strongly recommend the paid Director's Pass version to have access to all the available characters and backgrounds.

The free version comes with one collection of characters/backgrounds: Fairy Tales. It includes 7 characters and 3 coordinating backdrops. It also includes the ability to import your own photo and use it as a character. The paid version includes nine more sets of characters/backdrops at .99 each. OR, you can buy the Director's Pass at $2.99 and get them all! The other themes include Monsters, On the Farm, Political Par-tay, Christmas, Talk Shows, Zombie Attack, Pirates, Fairytale, and Wild West.

Here is how to use it. Be prepared for how EASY it is to make your own movie!!

Tap to find the Puppet Pals app. If you have a lot of apps on your iPad... this may be the hardest step! LOL

[1] Click Press to Start. This will take you to the Actors page.
[2] In the free version, you have access to the Fairy Tale collection. It includes a mouse, a crow, a dragon, fairy godmother, knight in shiny armor, princess, and an old hag. You can choose one or more characters for your story (up to 8 actors). Just click the ones you want.

In the Actor page you can also bring in your OWN character! Just click the Add Actor from Photo option. When you do this you can take a picture from your i-product and save to your camera roll OR just choose a picture from your camera roll. Choose the picture you want. This takes you to a page where you 'cut out' the picture you want. I like to take a picture of my students so they can be part of the scene! Just 'cut out' their picture from the photo by tracing their body with your finger. A green line will appear to show you the cut line. When you lift your finger, it automatically cuts out the picture. If you don't like it, press reject and try again. If you do like it, click accept and it adds it to the My Actors list which is found on the Actors page.

Want your student to fight a dragon and have the knight come to save you? Choose those 3 actors.
Now click Next.
[3] Choose a background and click next. You can also choose more than one background if you are going to do more than one scene! If you do this, you'll find a giant corded rope that hangs from the ceiling on the next page. You'll just "pull" the rope to change scenes.

[4] You are now "on stage." There is a slider at the bottom to make the scene bigger or smaller. I suggest leaving it where it is so that your actors can 'walk' off stage.

You can 2 finger to enlarge/shrink your actor or to rotate them.
[5] Click the red 'record' button at the top to begin your recording. Touch the actor and speak to make them talk and move them around the scene. If you have two actors who overlap a bit, whichever actor you are touching will come to the foreground. When you touch the next actor, that one will come to the foreground. If you want the scene to be empty when you're finished, just 'walk' them offstage.

[6] Click the square button to stop the recording. At this point you can click the "disk" icon to save the recording. Give the story a title and click save. You can now click yes to the Do you Want to View and it will show you some options. You can play the scene from there or you can export your video. It exports to your camera roll so you can take it from there to your computer as you would any picture or video through your itunes account.

Have fun with this incredible iTunes app. Even my PreK students are able to do this one on their own start to finish. Great for oral language skills and vocabulary.
Today we made our Thank You notes for Donors Choose. Since we are not all writing our names yet, I told them to draw a picture of our Sink or Float experiment and then I wrote in what they said about their picture. #1 and #2 did a great job, but I DO believe that #3 stole the show!!
One of the things we got recently was the Can-Do Science Kit from Lakeshore. One of the kits was the Sink or Float kit which included a plastic container, a plastic boat, eyedropper, a little plastic boat, marble, key, rubber ducky, wooden block, metal block, a small sponge, and a large sponge. These little fingers.. they are just ITCHIN' to plop something in that water!!

Just taking it out of it's cylinder and the kids were all over it! We all gathered around a table and I laid out the supplies and talked about what we were going to be doing and instructed on how to place, not plop, the item onto the water in the plastic container.

The kit has great little kid friendly graphic instructions. The first "directions" card had us put in the rubber duck.

Now, the fun part.. to observe what was happening. Just the simple question of "What do you see?" brought on many answers. We finally got to the point where we noticed that he was on top AND not on top of the water. He was displacing the water. I LOVE the looks on their faces in this picture!!

Of course, the most fun was when they got to use it in a center by themselves. He is concentrating so hard to try to sink the boat... just one drop of water at a time.

I can't believe it's already here. This year has literal flown on by! This is my second year in PreK and I love that God placed me with such precious children. I saw one during the break and it just warmed my heart. Hubs got to see her (I talk about her all the time!) and said again and again that he couldn't stop smiling after seeing her hug me and just the look on her face and the excitement in her voice.

I will be getting a student teacher in just a couple of weeks. Very excited to have her join me and my little family. I have such special stories of each kiddo that it might even be difficult for me to share them! Gosh! That sounds bad!! I am such a mother hen when it comes to my babies!

I showed them all a picture from online of what it would look like. They have always loved the feel of their hands being painted. They giggle and say how much it tickles. I put them in their center groups and one group at a time they come to me for the ornament project.

Once I start painting on the scarf, eyes, hat, and carrot nose, the snowman comes to life! Seeing their little hand turning into a work of art just amazes them.

It was time for specials, so I lined them all up and we walked to Music class. I came back to my room and sat and worked on as many ornaments as I could get to while they were gone. As I sat there, I fell in love with what I was seeing. Memories being made. A snapshot of each child on this very day of his or her life.

I was painting on some carrot noses when it occurred to me just why we take so much time with the kids to do these "silly" "time consuming" projects. For memories. We do them for the many Mama's and the Daddy's who, unfortunately, have faced tragedies. I have given memories to the Mama whose TWO kids I had who perished in a house fire. Teachers give memories to those families whose children have been take away by idiot gunmen who come and take our babies from us. It's heartbreaking. Those were the thought that went through my mind as I painted on details.

It was time to pick up my lovelies from Music, when I met up with my partner teacher. She looked at me and said, "There's been another shooting in Colorado." I couldn't believe it. The very thing I had been thinking. Just wanted to hold them all so close to me.

An ornament will never replace a Mama's baby. But hopefully it be a memory she can hang on her tree to remember today's moment in time.

[To make these ornaments, just paint your child's hand white and place an ornament in their hand. Take the pointed end of a paintbrush and dot on snow. When the handprint has dried, add on a warm cap and a scarf. Use the end of the paintbrush again to add perfect dotted eyes and mouth. Use a small brush to dab on the carrot nose. That's it! Make sure to add the child's name and year on the bottom or back of the ornament.] Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13426014682773896526noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075206466086088692.post-71863422754317762262013-12-12T18:17:00.004-06:002013-12-12T18:17:46.332-06:00When the little red-headed girl moves. What do you do when the little red-headed girls moves away? You know, the little one that has tugged at your heartstrings since the first day of school. The one that makes the goofiest comments and always brings a smile to your face.

In my case, it's not a red-headed girl, it's a blond-headed boy. He "says" he is moving. Of course, we hear that all the time and most of the time it is inaccurate/misinterpreted information. But when he said he was moving, all I could think was NOOOOO.. not this one!! He is such a doll! He is super in love with me! LOL He is like Flight of the Bumblebees on Steriods as he flits about in front of me, holding my hand or my leg.

Hoping I won't have to say goodbye. But if I do, the hug farewell will be filled with some really wonderful memories.
He is very small and so, very tricky! Yesterday, when we met him, he was hanging from our flagpole! The kids immediately saw him, even before he was introduced. We discovered that his name is Twinkle Toes and he was sent to our classroom to check on the kids for Santa. Twinkle Toes is a scout elf for Santa. He reports back to Santa each evening as to how the kids were that day. We are having to be extra careful, and the kids definitely remind me, that we cannot touch Twinkle Toes. Apparently, his Christmas magic will leave and then he won't be able to report to Santa when the kids have been on their best behavior!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13426014682773896526noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075206466086088692.post-83520801762934992862013-10-16T21:43:00.001-05:002013-10-16T21:45:51.337-05:00Game Show BonanzaI can't tell you how much I've enjoyed making my new Game Shows!! I'm working on one for Landforms at the moment, but have quite a few for 2nd-4th grade Math and Language Arts. I've really upped the game by adding game show contestants and actual on the spot automatic scoring. It's really added a LOT to the games and the teachers (and students) are having a fun time with them!

There are four contestants, so you'd begin by dividing your class into four groups. Those four groups choose which "contestants" team they are on. One by one, a team will choose a category and dollar value. A question appears and the team answers. Once you guess an answer, you click the "Check Answer" button for the answer to appear. If you got the answer right, you click on your "contestant" to award your team the point value. You can now choose to go back to the game board to choose another question OR go to the scoreboard where you'll find the contestants at their game console, which also shows the current scores.

The games all follow Common Core Standards and include:
Multiplication & Division Facts
Place Value
Comparing & Ordering Numbers
a Halloween Theme for Grammar
Recently, we were reading a book in which the grandmother came to babysit the little girl. Mom was obviously very pregnant: didn't have room on her lap for daughter to sit on anymore, knitting tiny clothes even when her dolls didn't need clothes...

As much as I questioned the things Mom was doing and that she returned home with a baby, only one figured out that she had been pregnant. (The one who figured it out is about to have a little brother!) So, suddenly as everyone is saying ALLLLL their moms are about to have a baby, one boy said, "My mom's not about to have a baby, she just ate too much food!"

Gotta love em!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13426014682773896526noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075206466086088692.post-22124596101476423772013-10-03T06:03:00.000-05:002013-10-03T06:03:07.792-05:00Apple Centers

We have had such a good time
with it. We even related it to habitats since a star "lives" inside an
apple. So here we are. We've talked about apples, graphed them, and tasted them. Now to stamping with them. It was exciting to discover the star inside, especially when we were about to stamp with them. Each child got half of an apple and dipped it in the red paint. Not all of the kids got the star to show up in their pictures, but the ones who did, were so proud!

The kids are LOVING this iWW lite handwriting app. (i Write Words) It was a FREEBIE app and so easy to use. The desktop icon is a giraffe, so the kids recognize it instantly. There are quite a few options to choose from once you tap the giraffe.

Once an option is chosen, a little crab appears along with an upper (or lower) case letter. (Numbers are also an option to choose from.) When the letter appears, numbers mark their way to show the direction you should be writing. You put your finger on the crab and follow the numbers. If you do it correct, he will continue with the next section of the letter. If you go off course, the app will "squeak" at you and return to the beginning of the letter. It took the kids a few times to realize, OH! I'm going the wrong way!

They love the lady's voice that speaks words of encouragement and just the simplicity of the format. A small bonus.. really a HUGE bonus, is the little wheel at the bottom! When you've completed the letter or word a little wheel appears and it is spinning. You angle the iPod over a little and the letter will slide into the wheel and gets "eaten" up!

through testing the classes for Beginning of Year testing. We'll do
this each 9 weeks prior to report cards. We test on colors, shapes,
upper and lower case letters, the sounds of the letters, numbers, and
writing their first name. We have a LOT to cover this year!

We learn in many ways.. through tracing, computer games, creating with
playdoh, iPods, shaving cream.. you name it! Lots of practice in
different ways.... keeps us all happy!

<span class="userContent" data-ft="{"tn":"K"}">Are you able to test your little guys successfully without an aid in the room to help? I thought it was going to be very difficult, but our learning centers have made the testing pretty easy going. They know their groups now and have down the use of the centers. One happy teacher here! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13426014682773896526noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6075206466086088692.post-51593928358398947352013-09-16T16:36:00.003-05:002013-09-16T16:36:36.675-05:00Johnny Appleseed's birthdayWhat better way to celebrate Johnny Appleseed's birthday, but with a game! I can't wait to share this upper and lower case alphabet interactive game with my little guys. We are just now introducing the letters, so I know it will be early for many of them. I know they will have fun with the graphics anyway. I'll take pictures and let you know how they did.
